As you might have noticed, the European rail network is seeing plenty of engineering works and disruptions, including on major railways. Here is a (non-exhaustive) list, it will be updated regularly but we cannot follow all disruptions. Feel free to post your questions on r/Interrail.

Hamburg – Berlin

  • 2nd August 2025 – 13th June 2026: full closure, one of the Generalsanierungen projects. ICEs rerouted via Uelzen = 45-60 min longer/50% usual service.

Hamburg – Hannover

  • 1st May – 10th July: usual route via Celle and Uelzen closed. Diverted ICEs: +45 min travel time.

Hannover – Berlin

  • 2nd October – 3rd December 2026: high-speed line closed. Divertions via Braunschweig/Magdeburg or Hamburg (ICE Amsterdam – Berlin): +60-80 min travel time.

Berlin – Leipzig – Erfurt – Munich

  • (30th October – 12th December: Nürnberg – Ingolstadt closed. Expect 30 min longer travel time and less trains running.)

Nürnberg – Regensburg – Passau (- Austria)

Nothing major at the moment.

Italy

Simplon (Domodossola – Milan)

Next full closures in 2026:

  • 7-25th June (Domodossola – Milan)
  • 26th June – 26th July (Iselle – Domodossola – Milan)

In the first phase, direct buses run between Domodossola and Milan: 2h20 travel time incl. significant margin. Regional replacement buses as well.
In the second phase, multiple bus lines are running: Iselle – Domodossola, Domodossola – Milan and Iselle – Milan. Regional as well.
There are also comfortable buses on Geneva – Martigny – Milan. 6h travel time. A seat is guaranteed.
Mandatory reservations on all long-distance buses: tickets available on sbb.ch and trenitalia.ch. Interrail/Eurail reservations at ticket counters.

In addition, throughout the rest of the year weekday 10am-3pm closures with less EC and regional trains. 2 buses Arona -> Domodossola, 1 back.

Como – Milan

  • 27th July – 23rd August: single track between Como and Seregno. RE80s not running beyond Lugano or Como.

Po bridge works:

  • 31st May – 19th July: one track closed. Little impact.
  • 20th July – 28th August: full closure. Big disruption.
  • 29th August – 27th September: one track closed. Little impact.

Expect longer travel times and train reroutings similar to summer 2025: regionals via Valenza, IC via Piacenza. Some direct Milan – Genova buses also running.

Milan – Bologna high-speed line

  • 10-17th August: partial closure. Divertions northwest of Reggio Emilia using the classic line (+45 min travel time). Reduced frequency (hourly)

Bologna – Florence – Rome high-speed line

6-9th and 27-30th July: Florence Campo di Marte – Florence S.M.N. (main station) CLOSED. Alternative concept is as follows:

  • hourly Frecciarossa Rome – Florence S.M.N – Bologna – Milan: 2h30 extra travel time due to a long divertion.
  • hourly Frecciarossa Rome – Florence Campo di Marte shuttles with bus connection to Florence S.M.N. About 1h15 faster.

10-28th August. Expect 30 min longer travel times. There are also works between Milan and Bologna 10-17th August (45 min extra). Reduced frequency (hourly)

Rome – Naples high-speed line

  • 8-21st November: closure south of Cassino. Expect longer travel times.

Basel – Saint-Louis/Mulhouse

Line closed between Basel SBB and Saint-Louis on various weekends. Passengers use tram 3 (all rail tickets valid).

Geneva – Bellegarde – Paris/Lyon

La Plaine station fully closed between 27th July and 17th August. TER and R L5/L6 replaced by buses between Geneva and Bellegarde. Some TGVs rerouted through Vallorbe, some TGVs start in Annemasse or Bellegarde.

Lausanne – Vallorbe – Paris

Mont-d’Or tunnel closed from 10th to 25th October. 1 bus in the morning from Vallorbe (07:00) to Frasne, change to the TGV. Same concept in the evening. Alternatives via Geneva or Neuchâtel.

Turkey

Mersin – Yenice Branch Line

The line between Mersin and Yenice is being shut down starting from April 22, 2024 for a minimum of 24 months as part of HSR construction. During this time, the Mersin – Adana regionals will not run. The Mersin – İskenderun regionals will probably terminate at Yenice, but this is not confirmed as of April 5, 2024. No sleeper or mainline services seem to be affected at this time. TCDD will not offer any rail replacement services. Travelers wishing to visit or otherwise go to Mersin should take a bus to/from Yenice or Adana.

United Kingdom

Far North Line

8-28th June: replacement buses running on Inverness – Thurso/Wick
